Continuing education is an ongoing requirement for campus administrators. Instructional leadership, as it focuses on the job role of campus principals, continues to be identified as a primary school improvement concern. The Principal Leadership Academy and the Assistant Principal Academy are designed to provide high quality professional development opportunities for campus administrators.
ACADEMY STRUCTURE
Specific activities will include seven (7) training sessions. The initial session will be a two-day kick-off to set the tone and context of the Academy. Five (5) additional training sessions will be spread out over the entire school term and may be linked to national speakers.
Cohort groups will be limited in size determined by the number of participating principals and assistant principals. Smaller collegial focus groups will be organized within each cohort group to facilitate collegial development.
Content focus will be on all aspects of campus instructional leadership to enhance student performance. Topics include: curriculum and instruction, research-based educational and leadership practices, leadership for effective change, inclusion and diversity, collaboration and others as determined by the academy discussions.
Participants in either academy (PLA or APLA) will receive 7.5 hours of professional development for each full day attended.
SELECTION PROCESS
Selection of participants will be made through the superintendent’s or district designated contact's office. The selection list will be submitted to the ESC contact in charge of the service. Suggested criteria for participants will include proven commitment to the profession, personal dedication to professional growth, and district willingness to support academy activities of selected principals and assistant principals.
The fee for Academy Membership is communicated annually to district superintendents as part of the commitment process for the Package of Administrative Services.
