Professional/Executive coaching has become an important part of corporate America’s drive to refine the skills of their current and future leaders. Region 10 has taken the concepts of executive coaching and designed a program for school principals to increase their leadership skills and their success within their schools. The service provides participants with a unique program of one-to-one coaching sessions with a trained professional coach where the principal explores the intricacies of being successful within the context of the day-to-day challenges of their current position. Coaching enhances professional skills and knowledge for maximum success by providing support and collaboration in a sustained learning environment to make effective campus principals even better. This program is for a principal’s professional growth; it is NOT a tool to address or correct poor performance.
COMPONENTS OF PROGRAM
Principals will form a confidential and professional relationship with their coach who will be a trusted confidante and a reflective listener. Continual follow-up from prior and new learning is a major component of the program. Coaching sessions focus on issues of importance as determined by the principal.
COACHES
Region 10 has contracted with an outside vendor to provide the professional coaches. Coaching for Results is a dynamic group of national coaches who are professional educators with a proven track record of coaching school leaders in diverse settings. Their purpose is to support and foster confident, competent, courageous school leaders who lead their schools to high performance.
OUTCOMES OF PROGRAM
Principals can expect added confidence in their ability to utilize numerous strategies to advance success and achievement. Skills will be sharpened in prioritizing, delegating, and accepting realistic tasks. Principals will experience clarity and alignment with the school’s and district’s vision. Reflective thinking and decision making on school improvement will be elevated.
STRUCTURE OF PROGRAM
Principals will be allocated 15 telephone coaching sessions from September through May. Prior to their first coaching session, principals will attend a coaching orientation in which the coaching protocols and strategies for the program will be discussed. Following their last coaching session, principals will attend a follow-up session to offer their input on how well the program worked for them.
SELECTION PROCESS
Coaching will be provided to principals from Region 10 districts and coordinated through Region10 ESC. Selection of participants will be made by the superintendent with an understanding that Principal Coaching is not an intervention for principals in need of improvement. Please contact the program coordinator, Carlene Lenox, to enroll principals in the program.
