SUPERINTENDENTS' ACADEMY

Continuing education and professional renewal is an ongoing requirement for district superintendents. Instructional leadership, as it focuses on the job role of superintendent, continues to be identified as a primary school and district improvement concern. Professional development of superintendents, therefore, is the focus of the Region 10 Superintendents' Academy, which is designed to be responsive to superintendent’s feedback and the following eight Professional Standards for the Superintendency: Learner-Centered Values and Ethics of Leadership, Learner-Centered Leadership and District Culture, Learner-Centered Human Resources Leadership and Management, Learner-Centered Policy and Governance, Learner-Centered Communications and Community Relations, Learner-Centered Organizational Leadership and Management, Learner-Centered Curriculum Planning and Development and Learner-Centered Instructional Leadership and Management.

ACADEMY STRUCTURE

Specific activities will include five to seven days of training sessions generally one-half to two days in length. Several training sessions will be scheduled off-site during the 2009-2010 school year, including the Region 10 Superintendents' Academy Breakfast at the Mid-Winter Conference, the annual summer conference, and the January retreat for new superintendents and mentors. The regular sessions may be scheduled in conjuction with other superintendent activities, including the Annual Superintendents' Workshop at Tanglewood and the quarterly meetings of TASA/TACS held at Region 10 ESC.

  • The sessions will be constructed to address the Professional Standards for Superintendency, the emerging legislative and other issues facing the districts, and the professional development needs identified by the superintendents.
  • Systems thinking and focus with similar and related topics will continue to provide the foundation for the programs for 2009-2010.
  • The superintendents will be encouraged to participate in focus or problem-solving groups to share their expertise and learn from one another.
  • Mentoring will be an important part of the Region 10 ESC Superintendents' Academy program.
    • First time superintendents will be able to use the Superintendents' Academy structure to fulfill the requirements of the Texas Administrative Code for mentoring.
    • Experienced Region 10 superintendents who elect to participate will be provided an opportunity for training as mentors of new Region 10 superintendents.
    • Time will be set aside at each session for new superintendents and mentors to meet for communication, networking/sharing, and planning.

MEMBERSHIP

All Region 10 superintendents will be guaranteed participation in the Academy, should they elect membership. New superintendents will be encouraged to participate in all aspects of the Superintendents' Academy as the vehicle for obtaining qualified training hours and meeting the requirements of the Texas Administrative Code.
