Effective January 1, 2006, elected and appointed public officials are required by state law to receive training in Texas Open Government Laws - the Open Meetings Act and the Public Information Act. Board members must receive the training within 90 days of being seated. Training consists of viewing two videos each approximately one hour in length.

SBOE Required Training Course [19 TAC § 61.1 (b) (1)(B)] A newly elected board member of an independent school district shall receive the orientation to the TEC within the first year of service. The orientation shall be delivered by ESCs and shall be three hours in length.
To receive your three hours of Level I credit contact Deborah Cahill with your name, the title of the training, the date the video was viewed, and your district.

After each session of the Texas Legislature, including each regular session and called session related to education, each school board member shall receive an update from an ESC or any registered provider to the basic orientation to the TEC. The update session shall be of sufficient length to familiarize board members with major changes in the code and other relevant legal developments related to school governance.

Level II members will have access to a team building and planning session to focus on (1) an evaluation and analysis of the Board as an operational team and (2) setting the continuing education goals for the Board/Superintendent team for the following year. These sessions are delivered in the individual district with the planning at the discretion of the Superintendent and Board.

Each board member shall receive additional continuing education on an annual basis in fulfillment of assessed needs and based on the framework for governance leadership. In a board member's first year of service, he or she shall receive at least ten hours of continuing education in fulfillment of assessed needs. Following a board member's first year of service, he or she shall receive at least five hours of continuing education annually in fulfillment of assessed needs.
