An exploration of the depths of Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and strategies that must be taught explicitly to the ELL student to enhance transference to Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency Skills (CALPS); Participants will gain knowledge on how to use the Proficiency Level Descriptors (PLDs) in Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing as a tool to drive instruction and assess students’ progress through the use of portfolios.
Strategies and Resources for Foreign Language Levels I – II
Participants will learn strategies for helping students become proficient in foreign language and will be provided with resources for implementation of strategies to create strong foreign language programs.

Participants will learn strategies for helping students become proficient in foreign language and will be provided with resources for implementation of strategies to create strong foreign language programs.
Making Connections between Writing & Reading: The Many Faces of Shared Reading and Interactive Writing (2-12)
Participants will learn strategies that extend the traditional shared reading and interactive writing activities into connections between reading and writing.
Math Instruction and the ELL (K-12)
Participants will learn how to apply language instruction within the math context. The teacher will be involved in interactive activities that will assist the ELL in problem solving and reading comprehension of word problems.
Path to Scholarships TM - Secondary Student Workshop (7-12)
Path to Scholarships is an academic, motivational blueprint for successful dropout prevention. It empowers all students to pursue post-secondary education thus reducing the dropout rate and increasing the graduation rate motivating all students to do above average things. This workshop will walk students through the scholarship search and application process step by step.
Reading Strategies for the Adolescent Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Student across the Content Areas (7-12)
Practical, effective reading strategies that promote academic language, literacy, academic achievement and cross-cultural skills will be addressed.

Sheltered Instruction in the Core Areas (SIOP One Day Overview) (7-12)
This overview session is to engage teachers in how to assist ELLs in developing academic language and content concepts in the core areas. This overview consists of the 8 components of the SIOP Model.
Sheltered Instruction in the Core Areas (SIOP Model) (7-12)
This 2 day session will provide participants with sheltered instruction strategies that extend the time students have for getting language support services. In addition, participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to effectively plan, develop and delivers lessons that integrate language and content objectives.
SIOP II in Action (7-12)
This session will provide implementation strategies from the eight components as related to math, science and social studies. Participants will be actively engaged in developing SIOP lessons that incorporate the social, affective and cognitive skills for the ELL.
Team -Teach Approach: Integrating TEKS and Spiraling Skills from the General Ed. Classroom to the ESL Classroom (K-6)
Participants will understand why collaboration among general education, special education and ESL teacher is crucial for the development of academic language proficiency in ELLs. Various techniques and approaches to accomplishing this effectively will be addressed.
Texas Observation Protocol (1 day)
This one day training will train district-selected TOP raters responsible for rating LEP students in all eligible domains: reading (K-2 only), listening, speaking, and writing.
