Annual Bilingual/ESL/Migrant Education Conference (PreK-12)
The annual Bilingual, ESL and Migrant Education conference occurs each June and features national speakers on important and interesting topics vital to each of these programs. Each year stipends are provided to teachers from cooperative member districts. This is a must for all BE/ESL and teachers of Migrant students.

 

BE/ESL Speakers Bureau (PreK-12)
The BE/ESL team will work to bring in national speakers on hot topics in the BE/ESL fields throughout the year. Visit the calendar of events often to look for exciting events happening at Region 10.

 

Bilingual Academies for Newly Certified Bilingual Teachers (PreK-6)
This session is designed for teachers with 1-4 years of classroom experience. The academy will be divided into four sections with the first session as an on-line component. The participants will be engaged in the evolution of bilingual education, literacy development in the native language (Spanish), transition/transfer of skills into the second language and best practices in sheltered instruction.

 

Bilingual/ESL Coordinator Quarterly Meetings (PreK-12)
Informational meetings for coordinators and other district level decision makers will be offered quarterly throughout the school year. All districts that receive Title III funds or participate in the Region 10 BE/ESL or Title III cooperatives are invited to attend. Federal and state requirements and guidelines will be discussed.

 

I am ESL Certified, Now What? (ESL Academies) (PreK-12)
This academy is designed for the newly certified ESL teacher. It focuses on strategies that are proven effective with English language learners. It is divided into 3 components and participation in all three is required to receive credit for this academy.
Day 1: An online component focusing on legal requirements and basic concepts of English language acquisition
Day 2: An interactive, face to face session presented at Region 10 or a cluster meeting, which will focus on differentiation and vocabulary learning
Day 3: Also, an interactive, face to face learning environment at Region 10 or cluster meetings focusing on content area strategies and “Putting it all together”

 

Secondary Symposium for ELL Math & Science (6-12)  NEW!
Data from the Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) report shows that English Language Learners in middle schools and high schools throughout Region 10 struggle with math and science. With increasing demands for rigor embedded within the STAAR test, it is vital for secondary educators to proactively prepare ELLs to meet this challenge. This symposium invites secondary educators to participate in a series of hot topic workshops that address critical support systems and methods of instruction that help increase the academic trajectory towards success for ELLs. Secondary campuses that are interested in participating should send teams of 3 - 5 to include at least one principal plus math and science teachers to engage in rigorous discussions relevant to ELL achievement in math and science. The fall symposium will focus on Reading in Math and Science while the spring symposium will target Writing for Math and Science. Registration is limited to 100 participants. Early registration is highly encouraged so be sure to check the online Calendar of Events on a regular basis.

 

Tejas LEE (K-3)
Early identification of reading skills and comprehension development of young students is critical for planning and implementing a successful reading program. This training provides participants with the updates for the newly revised 2010-2014 Tejas LEE: El Inventario de Lectura en Espanol de Tejas. Training will be conducted in half day sessions. Training will include key elements of the assessment program: Spanish reading, comprehension and reading related skills. As a follow-up to the Tejas LEE updates, the grouping module training guides teachers on how to group students effectively according to the results from the assessment. The training will focus on how to prepare Tejas LEE data for grouping, the guidelines for differentiated instructional grouping, and how to choose appropriate intervention activities.

 

 

Compliance Training

 

Annual Measureable Achievement Objectives (AMAOs) Overview (BE/ESL Administrators) NEW!
2 hour session- This online course provides an overview of the AMAOs that are used for District Title III Accountability. Course components include a discussion of the three Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives that are used for federal accountability, an explanation of the way the objectives are calculated, the data sources used, and the interventions necessary if the district does not meet all three AMAOs. Participants will be given downloadable handouts and links to resources.

 

ELL Mid-year Assessment Training (PreK-12 Administrators)
This session will address updates on the administration and compliance of the TAKS, LAT and TELPAS assessments for LEP students, guidelines for LEP TAKS exemptions and exit level TAKS, and required documentation by the LPAC.

 

End of Year Program Evaluation (PreK-12 Administrators)
Districts are required by state and federal law to create an annual evaluation of Bilingual and ESL programs (TAC 89.1265 and NCLB section 3121). This workshop will address the information that should be included in the report (such as demographics, a description of programs and activities, academic progress, LEP exits, professional development, etc) and the data sources that can provide the necessary information to satisfy both state and federal requirements.

 

Ending the Year in Compliance (PreK-12 Administrators)
This session is designed to address the needs of new directors, coordinators and specialists in managing the BE/ESL program end of the year data and reports. Participants will learn of the LPAC responsibilities, required documentation as well as program evaluation for state and federal compliance.

 

Foundations of Compliance for New Directors (PreK-12 Administrators)  NEW!
New to navigating the world of BE/ESL state and federal requirements? These sessions will be geared towards the needs of new BE/ESL Directors and Coordinators. Topics will include: LPAC beginning and end of year compliance, understanding state and federal accountability systems (PBMAS, AMAOs, ELL Progress Indicator), discussion of program models and implementation, and understanding ELL assessment responsibilities.

 

IPT Training (PreK-12)
Training will focus on the administration of the English and Spanish oral language and writing Idea Proficiency Test for PreK-12.

 

LPAC Training (PreK-12)
This is annual session is for LPAC members who have not received previous training. We conduct this training in August and September.

 

PreLAS and LASLinks Training (PreK-12)
Training will focus on the administration of the English and Spanish oral language and writing LAS and LAS links assessment for PreK-12.

 

Woodcock Munoz Training (PreK-12)

Training will focus on the administration of the English and Spanish oral language and writing Woodcock Munoz assessment for PreK-12.
