Counselor Support

 

50 Ways to Lose Your License: Ethics for School Counselors

Interactive format with group activities and discussions and review and compare ASCA, ACA, and LPC codes of ethics.  Discuss ethical standards and conduct in real and hypothetical dilemmas; define personal values, evaluate and discuss conduct of counselors as depicted in selected movie vignettes. This session is fun as well as informative as you learn how to avoid some common dilemmas.

 

Brown Bag Seminars, Too NEW

Lunchtime seminars will be offered in partnership with Timberlawn Mental Health System on topics relative to substance abuse, violence prevention, health and wellness, etc. These sessions will be presented twice in the fall and spring semesters (2011-12).  Participants are invited to bring their lunch.  

 

Counselor Connect – 1st Friday

Monthly video conferences will provide information on specific topics related to counseling. They will be scheduled as timely updates to various issues facing counselors. (9 am -12 noon at various video conference sites across Region 10.)

 


School Counselor Program Development NEW

This workshop is designed to introduce the Texas State Model Guidance Plan, and how to implement this plan in your district.

 

 

College and Career Readiness

 

College and Career Readiness Cluster Conferences (7-12)

This workshop will provide relevant student data, analyzing data and strategic planning based on the data.  Each district will be provided resources that promote a college and career ready culture  including college applications and financial aid. Presented in your area, January 2012.

Chapter 37, PEIMS 425

For anyone seeking clarification concerning discipline, law and order under the Texas Education Code and related federal requirements, this important training is for all administrators who make decisions about discipline as well as those who review the Discipline Data Indicators including PEIMS Coordinators.

 

Child Sexual Abuse Prevention

This workshop is designed to educate school staff to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child abuse. Its purpose is to empower participants to take responsibility for the safety of school students by learning child abuse safety guidelines and strategies for intervention and prevention.

 

County Suicide Crisis Training NEW

Schools sometimes underestimate the emotional impact of the tragedy and the need for faculty and students to have the opportunity to process the event. Often schools do not have the network of trained personnel needed to help with a crisis. This training will be conducted in each county to provide network opportunities and strategies to deal with crisis.

 

Drug Impairment Training for Education Professionals (DITEP)
Administrators, counselors, teachers and school nurses will learn skills to recognize symptoms of drug and/or alcohol impairment. Training objectives will include important elements of the Texas Penal Code and the Texas Education Code.

 

Drugs and Gangs:  Why Do Teens Think These Things Are So Cool?
Participants will explore the identification and profile of a gang member and why students may choose to join gangs. Participants will hear about substance abuse issues and explore the financial incentives and marketing strategies used to lure youth to drugs and gangs.

 

Managing Angry and Aggressive Behavior in School Age Students

Dealing with angry and aggressive youth has become a common focus for counselors in all settings.  It is important to identify anger, teach cognitive management skills, physiological facts, effects of anger and appropriate strategies for diffusing and expressing this emotion.  This session focuses on age appropriate activities (K-12) with strategies, materials (inexpensive or easily obtained), relaxation, games, and communication.

 

Negotiate Training of Trainers (6-8) NEW

This new program was written and designed to impact relationships, healthy choices and positive self-esteem among middle school students. The program which originated in England, allows students to formulate and reflect on their attitude to 114 different issues including drug use, honesty, interpersonal relationships, friendships, etc.  By working with a randomly paired partner, friendship circles are developed and strengthened in the school.  The program is also designed to reduce bullying behavior and improve student attitudes during the middle school years. (6-8)

 

Organization and Strategies for DAEP- Discipline Alternative Education Program
If you would like organization ideas or strategies for dealing with DAEP students, this best practices workshop is just for you. The presenter will provide staff development ideas, DAEP students/characteristics and research about alternative education, in addition to strategies for dealing with those challenges.

 

Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL)
This two day workshop is designed to incorporate the PAL Program into the fabric of the schools. PAL Services will instruct and guide district representatives as to the benefit and the responsibilities of the districts. The focus of this workshop will include: recruitment and selection of PAL students, how to use the PAL Sponsor Manual, lesson planning, assessment of professional and community resources, PAL program supervision, maintenance, and evaluation, and service delivery.

 

Peers Making Peace
Participants will be able to implement the proven, science/research-based, award winning Peers Making Peace School Team Mediation Program on their elementary, middle and high school campuses. By implementing this one program, school campuses can have a triple impact: Violence Reduction, Disciplinary Infraction Reduction and Academic Achievement Improvement! (August 1, 2 & 3; Dec. 6, 7, & 8, 2011; Jan. 24, 25 & 26, 2012)

 

Prescription Drug Abuse & Current Drug Trends
Participants attending this session will become aware of a variety of prescription drugs abused by youth. They will receive tools and valuable resources to help school personnel identify signs, symptoms, and action steps to preventing drug abuse in local school districts.

 

Rainbow Days

Participants will learn evidence-based skills that can be used to teach children and youth a set of essential life skills to help them learn how to: cope with difficult family situations, resist peer pressure, set and achieve goals, and refuse alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Sessions are offered on the following topics throughout the school year: Elementary Connection, Kids Connection, and Youth Connection.

 

R Time to Stop Bullying (PK-6) NEW

This one-day workshop is designed for elementary campuses presently implementing the R Time Program to promote positive relationships and respect among students. Participants will receive a wealth of school-wide extension activities to further underline the anti-bullying message in elementary schools.

 

R Time Training of Trainers (PK-6)

R Time is a PK-6 program that teaches children interpersonal relationship skills, enhances citizenship and reduces bullying in the school.  Participants will learn to implement 15 minute-lessons that are powerful avenues for promoting a positive school climate for learning.  Each campus will receive one complimentary R Time manual and an opportunity to visit/observe teachers conducting R Time lessons with students in designated elementary schools. This session is designed for elementary campus teams (3-5 staff) who will be responsible for training staff and implementing the program on their campus following the training.

 

Teen Dating Violence/Making a Difference
Participants will learn the prevalence and impact of teen dating violence. They will leave with the understanding of the law, a district's implementation, and how to partner with the local community to provide resources and strategies to address this issue.

MADD Leadership Conference
This session is designed to empower high school students from the North Texas area with leadership and resiliency skills to make responsible decisions regarding alcohol use. The one-day event will provide an opportunity for students to be reminded of the consequences of drinking and driving and what they can do to promote alcohol prevention in their schools.

 

 

Professional Conferences

 

 

Counselor Forum with Garland ISD - August 11, 2011
This one-day conference is open to all CISS district counselors to provide a variety of workshops and featured speakers who will share topics relevant to school counselors (K-12) on topics including bullying, cyber-bullying, safety, mental health issues, etc.

 

Counselor Symposium - November 2, 1011

Counselors will have the opportunity to network and learn from nationally recognized experts in the field of school counseling at this annual event. In addition to training, counselors will have many opportunities to share resources and gather ideas from other counselors and service providers in all areas of counseling.  LPC credit will be awarded.

 

Red Ribbon Fair - October 6, 2011
This half-day event will feature a keynote speaker.  Following the presentation, participants will have an opportunity to visit community partners and vendors who will offer Red Ribbon materials, ideas and resources to help schools prepare to recognize National Red Ribbon Week.


Safe and Secure Schools Conference - October, 2011
This collaborative conference sponsored by Region 10 and the Texas School Safety Center will offer a variety of safety topics that will help promote safer schools for all students. Discussion topics will include: Internet Safety, Current Drug Trends, Gang Awareness and What Schools Can Do to Prevent Violence in Schools. The conference will also offer a Red Ribbon Fair featuring a wide variety of safety resources for schools and communities.

 

Victims of the Web Conference
This collaborative conference will feature discussions from experts on internet safety topics including cyber-bullying, social networking, cyber lingo, sexting, etc.  The one-day conference will provide districts with research-based information, resources and prevention/intervention tools to help schools promote online safety for students.
