Accommodations for Students with Dyslexia on STAAR (3-11) NEW
(Pending the release of the 2011-2012 Accommodations Manual)
Students identified with dyslexia benefit from specific accommodations to access curriculum while receiving instruction/intervention for word reading difficulties. This web-based presentation will outline accommodations that benefit the student identified as dyslexic.
Expository Reading and Writing for High School (9-11) NEW
This course will provide teachers with strategies to improve student reading comprehension and analytical writing skills. The state standards (ELAR TEKS, ELPS and CCRS) provide a framework for designing effective instruction that prepares students for success in high school coursework, college, and careers. In this course, we will focus on providing instruction that includes daily reading and writing activities that increase student knowledge and skills on a range of expository reading and writing activities.
Greatest Hits Vol. 1: ELAR Activities and Strategies from the Past (K-6, 7-12)
This volume of greatest hits will revisit the best-of-the-best strategies and activities from workshops of the past. Activities such as Novel in an Hour, Two Minute Warning, and Mystery Word will be shared with participants via this web-based, self-paced offering.
Reeling in Readers: The Expository Edition (K-2)
Expository text can and should be used frequently in the classroom. Many teachers are hesitant about using expository text for read alouds, but it can be a wonderful tool if appropriate books are chosen. This online course will showcase current expository texts for young children which can be read aloud. Suggested activities accompany many of the titles.
Reeling in Readers: Using Children’s Literature (K-5)
In this web-based offering, participants will be introduced to the latest children’s literature combined with practical, ready-to-use language arts lessons to engage students in literacy. Learn how to illuminate strengths of the texts (e.g., literary devices, author’s craft, the traits of writing, etc.) and develop appropriate activities that will strengthen student reading and writing all at your own pace and from the comfort of your personal computer.
Response to Intervention: FAQs (K-12) As Response to Intervention, or RtI, has become part of our vernacular, discussions more and more center around implementation. This series of online modules will provide information and answers to specific, commonly asked questions. If a deeper understanding of how RtI may be implemented on your campus is what you are looking for, then one or more of these modules is for you.
Running Records 101 (K-4)
This online course is for anyone who may need an introductory or refresher course on administering a running record. Participants will be given instruction on how to document specific errors or reading behaviors using the procedures introduced by Marie Clay. The course will also address how to interpret running records for accuracy and how to use the data to inform instruction.
Scavenger Hunt Through the Dyslexia Handbook (K-12) NEW
The purpose of this workshop is to take an adventuresome, intriguing, journey through The Dyslexia Handbook Revised 2007, Updated 2010 in order to map out the treasures that lie within. Participants will explore the bounty of the sources of laws and rules for dyslexia identification and instruction. Are you ready for the clues to accomplish your quest?
Teaching the Readiness Standards with Children’s Literature (3-8) NEW
According to TEA, “mastery of readiness standards are essential for success in the current grade or course, are important for preparedness for the next grade or course, support college and career readiness, necessitate in-depth instruction and address broad and deep ideas.” In this course, participants will become more familiar with the readiness standards and explore contemporary children’s literature that can be used in lessons to teach those standards.
Understanding Dyslexia (K-12)
This web-based presentation, available on the Region 10 Dyslexia website, provides an expanded overview on the definition of dyslexia from the International Dyslexia Association, as well as a brief discussion of the characteristics related to dyslexia that are commonly seen in the classroom setting.
