Campus Based Professional Development (2007-2008)

Title IV Cooperative

 

SDFSC Consultants provide support and technical assistance to Region 10 Title IV Cooperative schools in Substance Abuse Prevention; Violence Prevention; Resiliency Skill Development; and School Safety/Crisis Preparation.

The following topics can be developed for Title IV Cooperative school campuses and/or school parent organizations:


Substance Abuse Prevention r

  • Current Trends in Substance Abuse:
    Consultants assist districts by providing speakers to address current trends related to substance abuse and violence. Presentations may include additional topics such as Signs and Symptoms of Drug Abuse, Drug Paraphernalia, Club Drugs, Raves, Gang Awareness, Methamphetamine, etc.
  • Drug and Violence Education:
    Participants discover the interdisciplinary aspects of the free DAVE on-line curriculum as well as a wealth of Internet resources with additional lesson plans.
  • CHEESE: The New Face of Heroin :
    CHEESE represents a deadly trap confronting our youth. Participants will explore strategies for prevention, treatment and enforcement of this drug threat.
  • The Power of Prevention:
    Prevention of high risk behavior on a school campus is everyone's business.  Participants will review components of prevention planning.
  • Alcohol Prevention
  • Tobacco Prevention

Violence Prevention

  • Conflict Resolution:
    Participants practice active listening skills, reframing, problem solving, cooperation and respect to communicate more effectively in conflict management.
  • Second Step:
    Participants will gain an understanding of this research-based, teacher-friendly curricula. The Second Step program helps provide young people with the skills they need to create safe environments and become successful adults as it teaches social and emotional skills for violence prevention,
  • Bullying and Teasing:
    Participants learn awareness of differences and similarities between groups as well as among individuals. This workshop is designed to assist participants' in finding common ground as well as enriching differences of style, perceptions and perspectives.
  • Diversity and Acceptance:
    Participants understand the differences and similarities between groups as well as among individuals. This workshop is designed to assist participants' in finding common ground as weel as enriching differences of style, perceptions and perspectives.                                                                               
  • Child Abuse Prevention:                                                                                Participants will learn how to recognize signs of child abuse, ways to handle disclosures (when a child tells you about their abuse), and the process for reporting abuse to the authorities.                        
  • Gang Awareness:                                                                                           Participants will receive information, strategies, and materials to facilitate Prevention/Intervention for this community/ school issue.                                                                                           

 

Resiliency Skills Development

  • 40 Developmental Assets:
    Participants explore the positive factors in young people, families, communities, schools and other settings that have been found to be important in promoting students' healthy development. Search Institute has organized 40 Developmental Assets and research-based strategies for creating asset-rich schools and communities where students can grow and succeed in life.
  • Student Leadership/ Resiliency Skills Workshops:

Safety/Crisis Preparation

  • Safe School Survey:
    The on-line Safe School Survey assesses the overall safety of the school climate including student attitudes and behaviors regarding alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and violence. A comprehensive written report will be provided to the district following the survey.
  • Safe School Environments:
    Students and school personnel need a safe and secure environment to assure that all children achieve their full potential.  In this workshop, participants will explore the components of a safe school.
  • Internet Safety:                                                                                                            This workshop addresses the issues of  Internet safety and the dos and don'ts of Internet surfing, online chats, and instant messaging.
