All titles are available to members of Title II Regional Cooperative Services only.
Region 10 developed trainings are available by request as
CSCOPE or Non-CSCOPE versions.

The following are offered as full or 1/2-day sessions

Brain Train! Training your Brain to Read, Write, and Think like a Scientist (K-12) NEW
This session provides methods for building students' disciplinary literacy so they can learn from various texts, reflect on and generate new ideas, and share their thoughts in a scientific way.

Do You Know What They Know? Assessing and Differentiating for STAAR Success in Science (K-12)
Educators will develop a common understanding of formative assessment and how it is implemented in the classroom. Focus will be placed on effectively using formative assessment to measure what students think and adjust instruction based on this important feedback. In addition, teachers will learn how to use this assessment data to implement and manage small group instruction. Updated for 2011-2012!

Inspiring Gifted Learners (K-12) NEW
How do you reach the gifted students in your science classroom? In this session, participants will gain knowledge of the needs of gifted learners as well as tools to use to enhance their teaching and the learning of their students.

Journaling & Interactive Notetaking in Science
According to Robert Marzano, some instructional strategies are more effective at increasing retention rates among students. This professional development opportunity will provide participants with tools to set up interactive journals and incorporate note taking and summarization strategies.

Journaling: The Next Chapter
This workshop is designed for teachers who have previously attended and implemented Journaling & Interactive Notetaking in Science. Participants will be exposed to new examples of lessons in addition to sharing and discussing authentic activities from their own classrooms. Attendees will need to bring classroom journals to share with the group. Prerequisite:  Journaling & Interactive Notetaking in Science.

Make Learning about Living, Not Just about Knowing: PBL in Science (6-12)
This staff development session guides teachers to engage students in a variety of "real world" situations that accommodate a wide range of student interest. It is important for students to become critical thinkers and to develop broad knowledge that will allow them to become successful, not only in the classroom but also in real life situations. Participants will compare and contrast project based learning and problem based learning through classroom examples.

Reach for the STAAR! Transforming Your Teaching with the New TEKS (3-5, 6-8, 9-12)
NEW

In this professional development opportunity, teachers will gain increased knowledge of the readiness and supporting standards in the science TEKS in order to align classroom curriculum, instruction, and assessment to the new standards.

Science TEKS Overview for Grades K-12
Examine the new 2010 science TEKS to improve overall science instruction. Explore models of vertical alignment that strengthen participants’ knowledge of science concepts and processes, leading to student success on statewide assessments and post-secondary readiness.

Teaching Science in a Diverse Classroom (K-12) NEW
Research suggests that the expectations of the classroom teacher are a large predictor of student achievement. The combination of high expectations and research-based practices assist teachers in delivering high-quality instruction in any environment. This learning opportunity provides teachers with the tools they need to help all students from diverse backgrounds achieve success in their classrooms.

Teaching Science Through Literature (K-5)
Students learn best when the subject matter is meaningful and useful. Literature helps bring science to life. The lessons in this professional development will follow the 5E instructional model developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) and cover a variety of science content. Participants will walk away from this session with ideas on how to maximize their instructional time without sacrificing their content.

After School Specials (two-hour face-to-face sessions with a pre and post
online learning experience)
NEW

This year Region 10 Social Studies is piloting a new service to provide quality teacher training without the expense of substitute teachers. Limited funding brings about limitless ideas, and this new program – After School Specials – will feature two-hour after school workshops combined with "before" and "after" components. Based on sound research principles, After School Specials will provide participants with a pre-learning experience "before" the face-to-face workshop, critical content "during" the workshop, and an extension activity "after" the session is concluded for a more meaningful professional development experience.

Do You Know What They Know? Formative Assessment Strategies
Educators will develop a common understanding of formative assessment and how it is implemented in the classroom. Focus will be placed on effectively using formative assessment to measure what students think and know throughout the instructional period, not just at the end of a unit of study. Teachers will be able to adjust instruction based on this important feedback from students.

Doing What Works! Best Practices in the Science Classroom
This staff development session is designed to help teachers employ best practices as determined through research from Texas A&M University Center for Mathematics and Science Education. Strategies will include questioning, collaborative grouping, and inquiry.

Ignite Math and Science Instruction (K-5)
In order to create a more student-centered classroom, teachers need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to teach math and science in a more meaningful way. This training will provide teachers with instructional strategies that will help assist them in integrating their math and science instruction.

Implementing the ELPS in Science NEW
We have been to the ELPS training, now what? Classroom practices that contribute to successful science instruction for English Language Learners will be explored and misconceptions and roadblocks discussed.

PLN (Personal Learning Networks) (K-12) NEW
Teachers have always had learning networks—people we learn from and share with. This learning opportunity will demonstrate how teachers can expand their network to a larger audience, and save them time in the process. Some of the tools that will be explored will include Twitter, Diigo (and other social bookmarking sites), and Google tools.

Power Hour (during conference period face-to-face mini-workshop) NEW

CSCOPE Extreme Makeover: Science Edition
CSCOPE users will have an opportunity to explore changes to the scope and sequence (YAG), unit planning document (IFD), and vertical alignment document (VAD) as necessitated by the new science TEKS.

IT’S ALIVE! Bringing Science Instruction to Life with Interactive Whiteboards (K-12)
NEW
I have the technology, now what do I do with it? This staff development session will assist teachers in bringing science content to life through shared learning experiences designed with the 21st century student in mind. Time will be spent on creating lessons that incorporate either SMART or Promethean interactive white boards.

Facilitated Professional Learning Communities (PLC) NEW
Invite a Region 10 consultant to join your science PLC to facilitate productive conversations aimed at assisting the group in achieving its goals.
