Sheroes

Region 10’s purpose in organizing and presenting Sheroes is to celebrate and encourage. So many times in life, we come in contact with young women who have overcome extraordinary obstacles and yet their strengths go uncelebrated. Often, they are too busy and/or too humble to bring attention to themselves. In any case, their stories go untold.

On the flip side, there are many young people who are fighting uphill battles. Some are born into unfavorable conditions, some are placed in adverse circumstances, and some have fallen but are ready to get back up and try again. If they could look around and see a profile of someone who has been where they are, they might find the strength to keep going; to stay in school and get a handle on education, so that they can have more choices in life.

What is a Shero?

A Shero is…

  • A young woman who has achieved success in her life despite obstacles growing up. Those obstacles may have presented themselves in any number of ways, i.e. physical handicap, economic disadvantage, language/cultural difference, learning disability. Sheroes come from all walks of life.

AND

  • A young woman who is emerging as a leader in her chosen field of employment, business, service, and/or community. A Shero might be a high-profile woman or an every day woman.

  • A young woman who can attribute some of her achievement to education. A Shero has reached some level of personal and/or professional success because she was able to walk through doors or create windows of opportunity for herself due to the education under her belt or sash!
