Building Academic Vocabulary and Reading Strategies in Social Studies NEW
In order to meet students where they are and lead them to mastery of the state curriculum
standards on the Social Studies STAAR, effective instructional strategies to build vocabulary and
reading skills are evermore critical to social studies teachers. This workshop will help teachers
develop learner-centered activities to increase student achievement through building vocabulary
skills and teaching students how to read expository text.
Data-Driven Instruction in the Social Studies Classroom NEW
Just as one size does not fit all people, one lesson will not teach all students. How do we know
what our students need to be successful in our classroom? Based on Carol Ann Tomlinson’s
work on the differentiated classroom, participants in this workshop will learn how to use student
data, including student products, to make instructional decisions aimed at preparing students for
higher levels of achievement as required by the new social studies standards and assessment
system (STAAR).
Effective World Geography Instruction NEW
The World Geography EOC will test students’ understanding of geographic concepts through a
brand new test this year. More than ever, teachers need to plan active strategies using concept
attainment to deepen the understanding of complex concepts and skills. This training will take
the state training a step further by examining the elements of curriculum, instruction, and
assessment specific to World Geography TEKS. Teachers will learn how to create well-aligned
formative and summative assessment items for immediate use in the classroom.

Participants in this workshop will explore how to create meaningful assignments and activities
that require modern skills, including web literacy, to motivate students to achieve and take
ownership of their own learning.
Interventions for Struggling Students NEW
All students deserve to be successful. In this workshop, teachers will explore a variety of tools to
scaffold student understanding, facilitate small group instruction, implement effective peer
tutoring, and learn how interventions can help all students succeed in the social studies
classroom.
Reach for the STAAR! Teaching the Revised Social Studies TEKS NEW
The K-12 revised Social Studies TEKS were written with assessment in mind. In this workshop,

instructional approach to maximize student success in the classroom and on social studies
assessments and STAAR.

administrators will benefit from this workshop that embraces the art and science of teaching from
both sides of the classroom door.

the latest inquiry-based instructional strategies aimed at the social studies STAAR. Participants
will elevate the teacher-centered classroom into one of discovery by creating inquiry-based
explorations of high priority social studies content requiring the use of critical thinking and
problem-solving skills.
