Energizing Texas History
This year, The Texas State History Society joins with Region 10 to offer Texas History
colleagues a day of professional development focused on the specific needs of Texas History
teachers. This year’s symposium will be held at the Hall of State at Fair Park.
Math Connections to Social Studies (5th – 8th grade focus)
Social Studies and Math can be taught together to strengthen understanding in both content
areas. Teachers will learn how to use math strategies to teach social studies skills such as maps,
graphs and charts, and more! This customized training will utilize both STAAR-tested Math and
STAAR-tested Social Studies objectives.
Sequencing Social Studies – Telling History with Timelines
Participants in this workshop will explore instructional and assessment strategies based on the
revised social studies TEKS and STAAR that specifically engage students in developing the
skills of sequencing and cause-effect to remember the important moments in history across time.
Teaching Social Studies Well
Designed to uncover the basics of teaching social studies well, this class is specially designed for
teachers new to social studies content.
Teaching About the Holocaust Conference (also available via video conference)
The U.S. Memorial Holocaust Museum provides this annual Professional Development 3-day
event for secondary teaches to learn the fundamentals of teaching the Holocaust and Genocide
well. Breakfast and lunch are provided. All participants receive several resources free of charge,
and substitute reimbursement is available for qualifying teachers.
Stock Market Game™
Learn how to implement the Stock Market Game™ in your classroom. The SMG is an online
simulation used in classrooms nationwide to help teach economics, math, social studies, business
and language skills while focusing on the importance of investing and personal finance skills.

History Day Training Event with Steve Cure
Steve Cure from the Texas State Historical Association will present all the tips and tools for
participation in the Dallas Area History Day student competition.
Mock Trial Clinic
Teacher coaches and attorney advisors are invited to attend this training from the Dallas Bar
Association and Region 10 for participation in Mock Trial.
Law Related Education (LRE): New TEKS Update-LRE Style
This one day program will focus on key people, events, and court cases now added to the social
studies TEKS K-12. Using the history, government, and citizenship strands of the new TEKS,
separate breakout sessions with new innovative lessons will be conducted for elementary,
middle, and high school teachers. Teachers will receive all materials in electronic format and
lunch will be provided on site. Registration Fee $75
6th Floor Museum (with the US Library of Congress and Texas LRE): Teaching With
Primary Documents Institute
Teachers will explore how documents, films, artifacts, oral histories and other primary sources
can be used effectively and creatively in the classroom. Library of Congress staff will conduct
training on use of digital resources available on their American Memory website. Dr. Dennis
Simon will present an overview lecture on how America has responded to the loss of its
presidents. Staff from Law-Related Education will lead intensive sessions that use the U.S.
Constitution and the Bill of Rights to provide teachers with the tools necessary to understand
presidential succession and the criminal trial process.
DFW World Affairs Council Event: Choices: (regional focus varies)
Materials include specific readings, the framework of policy options regarding the issues, a
suggested five day lesson plan and resources and supplemental materials for teachers. There is a
$10 fee to cover the cost of lunch for participants.
DFW World Affairs Council Event: Global Citizenry Forum
This new event from the World Affairs Council is designed to give high school students a wide
perspective on the global landscape, including international careers, what they entail and how to
pursue their desired career path. There is a $10 fee to cover the cost of lunch for participants.
DFW World Affairs Council Event: Great Decisions
America’s Longest-Standing Global Affairs Education Program provides eight timely global
topics annually. Participants will receive a book, lessons, and a certificate for six professional
development hours. There is a $10 fee to cover the cost of lunch for participants.
