TPC Certification Area Requirements
All Level (EC-12) Certificates for Special Education
24 semester hours in a combination of the following subjects, with at least one course (3 semester hours) in each area: English, mathematics, science, and social studies
A minimum GPA of 2.5
Bilingual Generalist EC-4 and 4-8
24 semester hours in a combination of the following subjects, with at least one course (3 semester hours) in each area: English, mathematics, science, and social studies for Generalist EC-4 or two courses (6 hours) in each area for Generalist 4-8.
A minimum GPA of 2.5
- Applicants who hold a U.S. university degree must demonstrate Spanish proficiency through a Region 10 administered examination.
- Applicants who hold an out-of-country degree must demonstrate English proficiency through the TOEFL IBT.

The following require 12 - 24 semester hours (24 preferred) for individuals who have already passed the TExES content exam.

- LOTE: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Vietnamese (EC-12) *Also requires oral and written proficiency in target language through performance on the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) test
- LOTE: French, German, Latin, Spanish (6-12) *Also requires oral and written proficiency in target language through performance on the Texas Oral Proficiency Test (TOPT)
- Marketing (8-12) *Also requires 3 years fulltime relevant wage-earning experience
- Mathematics (4-8 or 8-12) *Also requires a passing score on pretest administered by Region 10

Generalist EC-4 and 4-8 with English as a Second Language (ESL)
24 semester hours in a combination of the following subjects, with at least one course (3 semester hours) in each area: English, mathematics, science, and social studies for Generalist EC-4 or two courses (6 hours) in each area for Generalist 4-8.
A minimum GPA of 2.5
English as a Second Language (ESL) 8-12
This certificate must be obtained in conjuction with another certification area.
24 semester hours in a combination of the following subjects, with at least two courses (6 semester hours) in each area: English, mathematics, science, and social studies
A minimum GPA of 2.5
24 hours in a specific content area
