TPC Certification Area Requirements

Special Education (EC-12)

12-24 semester hours in a combination of the following subjects, with at least one course (3 semester hours) in each area: English, mathematics, science, and social studies. A minimum GPA of 2.5. Passing a generalist exam:

  • Generalist EC-6 (to teach in elementary) or Generalist 4-8 (to teach in the middle school setting).
  • Applicants must meet the generalist testing requirement to be considered for program acceptance after January 31, 2010.

Bilingual Generalist EC-4 and 4-8

12- 24 semester hours in a combination of the following subjects, with at least one course (3 semester hours) in each area: English, mathematics, science, and social studies for Generalist EC-4 or two courses (6 hours) in each area for Generalist 4-8 and passing scores on a Generalist exam.
A minimum GPA of 2.5

  • Applicants who hold a U.S. university degree must demonstrate Spanish proficiency through a Region 10 administered examination.
  • Applicants who hold an out-of-country degree must demonstrate English proficiency through the TOEFL IBT.

The following require 12 - 24 semester hours (24 preferred) for individuals who have already passed the TExES content exam.

  • Family and Consumer Sciences (6-12)
  • Health Education (EC-12)
  • Health Science Technology (8-12)
  • History (8-12)
  • Hospitality, Nutrition and Food Science (8-12)
  • Journalism (8-12)
  • Life Sciences (8-12)
  • LOTE: Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Vietnamese (EC-12) *Also requires oral and written proficiency in target language through performance on the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) test and passing scores on the TOEFL IBT.
  • LOTE: French, German, Latin, Spanish (6-12) *Also requires oral and written proficiency in target language through performance on the Texas Oral Proficiency Test (TOPT)
  • Marketing (8-12) *Also requires 3 years fulltime relevant wage-earning experience
  • Mathematics (4-8 or 8-12) *Also requires a passing score on pretest administered by Region 10
  • Mathematics/Physics (8-12)
  • Mathematics/Physical Science/Engineering (8-12)
  • Mathematics/Science (4-8)

Generalist EC-4 and 4-8 with English as a Second Language (ESL)

12- 24 semester hours in a combination of the following subjects, with at least one course (3 semester hours) in each area: English, mathematics, science, and social studies for Generalist EC-4 or two courses (6 hours) in each area for Generalist 4-8 and passing scores on a Generalist exam.
A minimum GPA of 2.5
