Professional Learning Communities (PLC): There are several PLC Workshops available, including:

  • PLC Foundation Training (12 hours)
Participants will study the vision, mission, values and goals that are the hall marks of professional learning communities. Not only will participants learn about protocols that enable collaborative problem solving but they will also participate in those. Ways to transfer the learning from the workshop into the real life of the campus will be identified. Participants will study the research that supports the investment of educator time, district money and educator energy into the development of professional learning communities.

Foundation Training or its equivalent is a prerequisite for the following sessions. Campuses/districts are encouraged to select the session(s) that will enable enhancing collaboration among its constituents and as a result increase student learning.

  • Lesson Design Protocol and Student Led Focus Groups (6 hours)
Participants will study collaborative protocols for analyzing lesson design and the impact on student learning. In addition, they will examine ways to involve students in problem solving, i.e., Student Led Focus Groups. Small group discussions as well as videotape based experiences will be offered as ways to learn about these protocols.

  • Lesson Design and Instructional Analysis Protocols (6 hours)
Participants will study procedures that enable colleagues to comfortably observe and take notes regarding instructional events. Protocols for sharing observation data and the accompanying discussion formats will be examined. Participants will have an opportunity to practice these protocols within the session.

  • Conducting Professional Conversations in PLC Protocols (3-6 hours)
Participants will learn ways to respond to colleagues that support reflective thinking. Responding behaviors that will be identified and practiced include pausing, probing and questioning. These strategies will support colleagues in accessing solutions that enable excellence in teaching.

  • PLC Facilitation Training for Conducting Protocols and Small Group Meetings (6 hours)
A key person in the PLC is the facilitator of the protocols in the small group meetings. The facilitator assures that protocol guidelines are followed as well as uses procedures that maximize collaboration among the members. Participants will learn and will practice these guidelines and procedures.
