Access to the General Curriculum –

Least Restrictive Environment

Special education is a service, not a place.  However, understanding a student’s placement in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) is critical to successful progress through the curriculum or Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) as specified by the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) of 1997.

Building a shared responsibility for student learning requires all educators, general and special, to collaborate while implementing various instructional strategies to meet the needs of all students in the classroom.  Toward this end, Region 10 will offer the following services to districts and charter schools in our area:

  • Provide ongoing staff development designed to ensure successful outcomes for all students in general education settings, including student with disabilities.
  • Provide technical assistance to general and special education teachers regarding curricular and instructional strategies
  • Facilitate opportunities for district staff to visit other campuses who have been identified as having Promising Practices
  • Research, collect & disseminate information on least restrictive environment and inclusion
  • Develop capacity in schools to serve students with disabilities in inclusive settings
