When to Make a Referral for
Occupational and/or Physical Therapy
An evaluation for occupational therapy (OT) and/or physical therapy (PT) services may be requested through the ARD process for special education eligible students. Referral for and OT and/or PT evaluation may be appropriate for students who evidence one or more of the following characteristics:
- Difficulty holding head and/or body upright
- Difficulty assuming and maintaining sitting and/or standing without physical assistance
- Difficulty with mobility, walking, or maneuvering in a manner that limits independence in classroom or on campus
- Difficulty using arms and hands in manipulative tasks
- Severe eye-hand coordination difficulties (cutting, copying, and writing)
- Difficulties with oral motor function (chewing, sucking, swallowing, and drooling)
- Dependence at school with self care skills (self-feeding, dressing, etc.)
