When to Make a Referral for

Occupational and/or Physical Therapy

 

An evaluation for occupational therapy (OT) and/or physical therapy (PT) services may be requested through the ARD process for special education eligible students. Referral for and OT and/or PT evaluation may be appropriate for students who evidence one or more of the following characteristics:

 

  • Difficulty holding head and/or body upright
  • Difficulty assuming and maintaining sitting and/or standing without physical assistance
  • Difficulty with mobility, walking, or maneuvering in a manner that limits independence in classroom or on campus
  • Difficulty using arms and hands in manipulative tasks
  • Severe eye-hand coordination difficulties (cutting, copying, and writing)
  • Difficulties with oral motor function (chewing, sucking, swallowing, and drooling)
  • Dependence at school with self care skills (self-feeding, dressing, etc.)
